Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those 
    who have died in our nation's service. 



Originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. 
This day was proclaimed on May 5th in 1868 by 
National Commander, General John Logan of the 
Grand Army of the Republic. 
Decoration Day was first observed on May 30, 1868. 
Traditionally Memorial Day falls on this date. 
Congress changed this in 1968 to the last Monday in 
May to provide us with a three day weekend. 
There is a movement to change 
Memorial Day back to its official day.



Formal ways we observe Memorial Day is to wear Poppies 
in honor those who died serving the USA during a war. 
Visit a memorial and also cemeteries to place flowers 
on the graves of veterans. 
At 3 pm local time we should pause for a moment of 
silence or listen to TAPS. 
Some areas hold a parade to honor our fallen heroes.



Unofficially Memorial Day kicks off the summer season
